RANGOON — Burma’s ruling National League for Democracy party has formed a supervisory group to assess the performance of government officials and lawmakers.

The six-member performance assessment group is led by U Win Htein, a member of the NLD’s Secretariat. Other members include Lower House Speaker U Win Myint and Mandalay Division Chief Minister Dr. Zaw Myint Maung.

The formation of the group came after a party decision at a central executive committee meeting early this month, according to a statement released on Thursday. It came at a time when the Mon State chief minister, as well as the speaker and deputy speaker from Tenasserim Division, are under investigation for nepotism.

U Win Htein told the media on Thursday in Naypyidaw that officials at both the Union and divisional levels would be reviewed.

He said that those with good performance would be fine but those who are deemed as having poor performance will have that information forwarded to the president and state counselor.

“We will give our recommendations. The president and state counselor will then decide [for government officials] how to proceed,” he said, adding that divisional lawmakers would be dealt with in Parliament.
