Two Chinese companies will build a 500kV power grid for Myanmar. China Energy Engineering Group Hunan Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd, will implement the first part of the project, and SEPCO Electric Power Construction Corporation, will implement the second part of the project. Both companies signed an agreement with Electricity Supply Enterprise under the Ministry of Electricity and Energy.

Electricity Supply Enterprise, which is responsible for managing power distribution in Myanmar, said that this is to reduce power loss, power over loads, or system breakdown in power distribution. Hydropower plants or other power plants in the northern parts of the country, send power to the central and southern parts, which consume most of the power.

“We have been working on this since 2014. The ministry conducted a feasibility study, and finding the route in accordance with the suggestion of AF Consultant. The companies that will build the power grid, need to execute the project in time,’’said U Win Khaing, Union Minister of the Ministry of Electricity and Energy.

The power grid will start at Meiktila (Kan Kaung) in Mandalay Region, and run south to Taungoo in Bago Region. From there is will continue south to Hpa Yar Gyi, just north of Bago City. From the Hpa Yar Gyi, the power grid will connect to Hlaing Thar Yar in Yangon, and on into the Ayeyarwady Region, Mawlamyine in Mon State, and Dawei in Tanintharyi Region.

Currently, electricity is distributed using a 230kV power grid to the whole country. The ministry is now building and upgrading electricity stations and substations, and extending power grids in order to supply electricity sufficiently.
