The government has cancelled the fact that the nationwide ceasefire deal is to be carried out under the existing laws and the 2008 Constitution, according to sources.
The Union Peace-making Working Committee (UPWC) is drafting a nation-wide ceasefire deal in cooperation with the Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team (NCCT).
Both sides are working to finalise a nationwide ceasefire deal. They have already reached an agreement on 72 of 103 points and will hold talks on the remaining points in Yangon on August 15 and 16.
Dr Salai Lian Hmung who is a member from the NCCT said the government called an informal meeting between the UPWC and the NCCT in Myitkyina on August 3. The two-hour closed door meeting brought UPWC vice-chairmen Minister Aung Min, MP Thein Zaw and Lt-General Thet Naing Win together with NCCT leaders Naing Han Thar, Padoh Kwe Htoo Win and Dr Salai Lian Hmung.
Aye Tha Aung from the Arakan National Party said Aung Min, reiterated the point at a meeting with political parties at Myanmar Peace Centre on August 11. He quoted Aung Min as saying the 2008 charter and existing laws would not hinder peace talks.
“We talked about a federal union, charter change and the transformation of armed ethnic groups. He said the government supports a federal union and federal army,” Aye Tha Aung said.
The UPWC has sought advice from the Union Peace-Making Central Committee, which is chaired by President Thein Sein and includes Vice-President Dr Sai Mauk Kham, Lower House Speaker Thura Shwe Mann, Upper House Speaker Khin Aung Myint and Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, officials said.
