Political parties call for nationwide ceasefire through tripartite dialogue

Political parties on Monday issued a joint announcement which emphasizes on the necessity of lasting ceasefire agreement in Myanmar.

A total of 150 representatives from 66 parties attended clarification of peace-making processes by Myanmar Peace Center which was founded in October 2002.

At the meeting, Union Minister U Aung Min, vice-chairman of Union Peace-making Work Committee, said President U Thein Sein invited all the groups concerned for nationwide peace dialogue on August 2011, with the establishment of peace committees for negotiation with ethnic armed forces.

The peace-making work committee has hold 250 informal dialogues and more than 50 formal dialogues with armed groups, as well as at least 150 discussions with civil societies, political parties, political bodies and ethnic groups.

The government has signed ceasefire agreements with 14 armed groups out of 16 which have called a truce to move forwards to nationwide ceasefire agreement.

The representatives from political parties urged all the groups concerned for lasting peace agreement followed by political dialogues in line with ceasefire agreement.

They also called for a tripartite discussions among union peace-making committee, the Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team (NCCT) which include ethnic armed groups and political parties.
