The Government is prepared to compromise on more than half of the remaining demands being made by the Nationwide Cease-fire Co-ordination Team, the vice-chairman of the Union Peace-Making Work Committee, U Aung Min, said on May 4.

U Aung Min, who is also a Minister of the President’s Office, was speaking in Nay Pyi Taw after a dinner hosted by President U Thein Sein for outstanding youth.

U Aung Min was referring to the remaining 45 points of the 122-point national cease-fire agreement being negotiated following the conclusion of a draft agreement between negotiators from the UPWC and the NCCT, which represents 16 armed ethnic groups, at talks in Yangon on April 8.

“It would be unfair if we had to agree to comply with 100 percent of their demands,” U Aung Min said.

“Agreement will be reached if we each make compromises and we are prepared to accept half of their proposals. We will go half way. If they can compromise the other half, an agreement will be achieved,” he said.

The next round of talks on a ceasefire accord was expected to take place in the third week of May, the head of the NCCT, Nai Han Thar, was quoted as saying by Radio Free Asia on April 29.
