Asked recently what she is most pleased with after nine months in government, State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi had a simple response: “The fact that the ministers are not corrupt.”

In a December 8 interview with Channel NewsAsia, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi did concede that some of the junior officers in government “are not quite what we would wish them to be”, but added, “the practice of corruption has not become embedded in our culture and that’s very encouraging.”

The National League for Democracy’s corruption clampdown has been a win with the public.

Superficially, it initially appeared as if the NLD-led government had taken a hatchet to the ministries: combining and downsizing the cabinet from 36 ministries to just 22. Notably, three of those portfolios remain beyond the control of the civilian government, with Defence, Home Affairs and Border Affairs still under the Tatmadaw chief’s purview.

But the NLD’s cabinet appointments drew early fire by detractors who raised questions over the scrutiny process and the skimpy qualifications of some candidates, including several whose curriculum vitaes boasted fake alma maters and exaggerated degrees.
