UNICEF continues to offer full support to the education activities carried out within the scope of Humanitarian Aid Operation in Syria. The opening ceremony of the “Information and Education Center for Syrian Guests”, provided by the Ministry of Family and Social Policies to Prime Ministry Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) to be used as school facility and equipped by UNICEF, has been held. Celalettin Güvenç, Governor of Şanlıurfa province, Dr. Ayman A. Abulaban, UNICEF Turkey Representative, representatives of the protocol from Şanlıurfa, Robin Ellis, UNHCR Regional Coordinator and other representatives participated in the opening ceremony.

UNICEF continues to cooperate with various institutions and organizations, particularly AFAD, concerning the education offered to children living in refugee camps. UNICEF provided the internal equipment of the school in Şanlıurfa established for Syrian children living outside the refugee camp. The school, which would offer primary education to 580 children between 1st and 4th grades, is also the first of its kind, as it is the first initiative taken by UNICEF towards supporting education outside the camps.

UNICEF identified the equipment materials to be donated by taking the mostly needed equipments into consideration. Among the materials are desks, boards, teachers’ desks and cabinets, furniture for teachers’ and principal’s rooms, 1 copier, 13 computers together with licensed software and education kits including 3 different types of notebooks, crayons and pencil case.

“Life Goes on”

Dr. Ayman Abulaban, UNICEF Turkey Representative made a speech at the opening ceremony and said that life goes on in any case. He advised the Syrians at the ceremony that they should never lose their hope for returning their motherland one day in the future despite all the miseries they suffered. He added that parents should do their best in order that their children continue their education. He lastly said that Syrian children should make use of this opportunity in the best way possible.

“The Need for Education Opportunities Keeps Increasing”

The registration affairs of the Syrians living outside the camps are executed by the Coordination Center established by the Governorate of Şanlıurfa. AFAD has announced that the number of the Syrians registered by the Coordination Center is 2622 and that the number of Syrians would keep increasing. Since the number of the Syrians living outside the camps has increased the capacity of the school has been increased up to 580 students, which had originally been planned to be 400 students. AFAD and the Governorate of Şanlıurfa develop new alternatives for increasing demand.
