Local authorities, partners and UNHCR staff gathered on the 13th of september to celebrate the construction of the new system that will give the refugee population of the camp of Abala a closer, faster and safer access to water.

Financed by the UNHCR, the new system cost 165 000 USD and includes a water tower and 15 tap fountains that will allow the 14 292 refugees to walk a maximum of 500 metres to collect water. Thanks to the increase of sources, only a few minutes per day will now be spend to fetch water and thus enable refugees to save a lot of time and efforts.

The Prefet of Abala , Mayor of the Abala village, the President of the Refugee Committee and the UNHCR Senior Field Coordinator all applauded the common work to bring clean and safe water for the refugees and host communities in a country where access to this natural ressource is an ongoing struggle.

ACTED who oversaw the technical work on these infrastructures gave the officials a tour of the new infrastructures before the ribbon cutting ceremony led by the Prefet of Abala and completed by malian traditional music and dancing.

The authorities also visited the facilities where the improved stoves financed by the French Embassy and manufactured by SNV World are stored. The inauguration day ended with the symbolic hand over of improved stoves to refugees. The distribution of those items will benefit to 2516 households and will both facilitate their cooking routine and reduce the pressure of the camp on local environment.
