  • Monday July 24 witnessed another increase of approximately 6,000 new arrivals through the Masna border crossing with about 2,500 persons returning to Syria. Most of those interviewed before returning to Syria said they were doing so to check on their home or for personal reasons including business and family visits.

  • On July 10, the HRC publicly announced that it stopped covering the cost of secondary health care due to lack of funding. This will have a severe impact on UNHCR and partner agencies. While agencies will continue to shoulder most of the costs of humanitarian assistance, current funding levels do not permit these agencies from filling in for all coverage previously provided by the HRC. UNHCR is actively advocating for additional funding sources for the HRC in order to fill this urgent gap.

  • Jordan - Following the spike in the number of displaced Syrians in Stadium transit facility, UNICEF mobilised 20 portable latrines within 24 hours. These latrines were organised to help meet the urgent needs of the nearly 2,000 people now at the facility.

  • Lebanon - The first centralized distribution in Akkar started in June through various local sites spread throughout the North, including Rama’s mukhtar Ali Beddawi’s residence, the Mahad El Kabess community centre in Halba, Markaz el Saade centre in Kawashra and Machata Hammoud primary school. A total of 7,734 individuals received food, hygiene and baby kits.

  • UNICEF, in collaboration with partners and the Ministry of Education, began school-based summer holiday remedial education classes on 17 June, targeting 5,500 vulnerable Syrian and Jordanian children in 15 directorates. UNICEF partner Save the Children International is providing recreational activities and psychosocial support in 40 public schools to complement these activities. UNICEF has provided psychosocial support to over 6,000 vulnerable Syrian children and family members since the response began.
