New arrivals in Uganda report that armed militias are burning down homes, murdering civilians and forcibly recruiting young men and boys in to their ranks.

A new settlement area is to be opened in Yumbe district, and could potentially host up to 100,000 South Sudanese refugees.

Close to 16,000 South Sudanese refugees have fled to Uganda between 16th July - 20th July alone.

More than 18,000 South Sudanese refugees have fled to Uganda since fighting began in Juba on 7th July.

Torrential rains are hampering registration efforts for new arrivals in Uganda.

Collection points, transit centres and reception centres in Uganda are severely over-stretched due to the mass influx.

In Adjumani, 98% of yesterday’s 293 new arrivals were women and children under the age of 18.

It is anticipated that once border with South Sudan becomes fully passable, a mass influx of 10,000+ refugees could take place within a few days.

Border restrictions on South Sudan side have been eased slightly. Vehicles continue to be prevented from crossing but those on foot are now being granted access

The Juba – Nimule road, the main road to Uganda, reportedly continues to remain obstructed by check points and road blocks.
