In an effort to prevent a re-occurrence of a bomb blast in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in Adamawa State, the Police Commissioner, Gabriel Adaji has ordered security beef-up and total re-screening of the IDPs before they are re-absorbed into the camps.

The police commissioner disclosed this to journalists at the Malkoihi IDPs camp in Yola and added that more security personnel have been deployed to all the IDPs camps in the state, including the Malkoihi camp.

He said he has ordered his men to ransack every nook and cranny of the camps particularly the Malkoihi IDPs camp where the bomb blast occurred leading to the killing of seven persons and 13 injured.

According to Adaji, the police in collaboration with the state government and other security agencies are to beef up security around the camps and other parts of the state to prevent future attacks. He said the police has commenced investigation to uncover the mystery behind the bomb blast, adding that it was on top of the situation.

Corroborating the security efforts, the Adamawa state government has pledged support to the security agencies to ensure that the mastermind of Friday’s bomb blast are brought to book.

The state commissioner for Information, Ahmed Sajoh disclosed this in Yola and noted that the state government is working in conjunction with all security agencies to ensure water-tight security around all IDP facilities in the camp, noting that the security is currently re-screening all the IDPs at the Malkohi camp.

He added that the government would ensure that the security operatives analyse the debris of the explosive device used as part of the process of arresting such ugly incidents in the future.

The State Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Alhaji Sa’ad Bello said the agency officials have spoken to the IDPs to build confidence in them and also provide tight security network across the camps.

Bello told THISDAY in a telephone chat that experts were drafted to speak to the IDPs in a calculated attempt to eliminate fears of any future attacks on them.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian military has kept mum over the security of the IDPs and as well as their camps located in various parts of the North-east following the recent bombing of the IDPs Camp in Yola.

THISDAY enquiries revealed that several Nigerians are concerned about the safety of the IDPS after the latest attacks by suspected members of Boko Haram, who have increasingly infiltrated the communities since they lost territories.

The Director of Information (DDI), Col. Rabe Abubakar and Director of Army Public (DAPR), Col. Sani Usman did not respond to several calls and text messages to the phone lines.
However, military sources informed THISDAY that massive intelligence has been deployed to the various IDP Camps in collaboration with other security and emergency response agencies.

One of the senior officers disclosed that extensive plans are already being put in place to checkmate the infiltration of the camps by fleeing terrorists and ultimately “fish them out”. “We are putting necessary plans in place to forestall future occurrence”, the top military officer said.

Meanwhile Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu yesterday condemned the bombing of the IDPs camps in Adamawa State, describing it as a callous escalation of a bad situation. In a statement by his special adviser on media, Mr. Uche Anichukwu, Ekweremadu said while it was bad enough that the terror victims were displaced from their homes, attacking them in their temporary shelter was a worse form of man’s inhumanity to man.

The deputy senate president stated, “I just led a delegation of the Senate to visit the Adamawa IDPs camps in August to see things for ourselves, to encourage IDPs, and to assure them that they were not alone in this hour of dire need.”

Ekweremadu expressed his condolences to the families of those affected by the attacks as well as the government and people of Adamawa State, but maintained that the terrorists will never succeed in breaking the country’s resolve to defeat insurgency in all ramifications.

The deputy Senate President, after his visits to the IDPs camps in Adamawa State last month sent, in his personal capacity, relief materials worth over N9 million to the IDPs in the state.
