UNHCR launches shared web portal for Horn of Africa emergency

UNHCR launched the 2017 Supplementary Appeal for the Burundi Situation. Currently 2% of the overall funding requirements (US$ 250 million) has been received. More funding is urgently needed to increase capacity and to decongest overcrowded camps.

UNHCR kicked off verification and registration of some 6,000 asylum seekers from Sudan's South Kordofan and Blue Nile states who live in Juba.

UNHCR joined an inter-agency assessment in Mundri to look into the protection needs and concerns of more than 63,000 IDPs.

UNHCR issued asylum certificates to 507 individuals residing at the Protection of Civilian sites in Juba, originating mainly from Somalia, Eritrea and Ethiopia.

UNHCR is working with state governments in White Nile and East Darfur to improve access to birth registration for refugee children born in Sudan.

UNHCR is working closely with the Government of Sudan to improve South Sudanese refugee access to documentation and identification (ID) in Khartoum through a phased registration process. The Government's Immigration and Passport Police (IPP) unit initiated the first phase in mid-February to verify the total number of South Sudanese refugees living in Khartoum and issue them with foreigner ID numbers. Over 22,000 refugees have been registered by the IPP so far. The 2nd phase will be led by UNHCR and COR with biometric registration in order to support their access to protection, documentation and other assistance. Biometric registration will likely start in May and will be rolled out concurrently with the IPP process.

UNHCR is pleased to share that the vast majority of Somali arrivals on the outskirts have been relocated to safety.The current population of IFO 2 West exceeds 40,000 and Ifo 2 East nearly 30,000. Relocation ton Kambioos which started much later is nearly at the 10,000 mark already.

UNHCR is not promoting voluntary repatriation of Burundian refugees, it supports the exercise to ensure that all returns are safe and dignified, and the result of a free and informed choice.

UNHCR in partnership with AAHI donated medicines and medical supplies to Yei Civil Hospital as part of its support to the host community.
